- Summer time on the coast of Maine. In The Bedroom centres on the inner dynamics of a family in transition. Matt Fowler (Tom Wilkinson) is a doctor practising in his native Maine and is married to New York born Ruth Fowler (Sissy Spacek), a choral music teacher. Their only child, Frank (Nick Stahl), has become involved in a love affair with a local single mother (Marisa Tomei). As the beauty of this brief and fleeting summer comes to an end, these characters find themselves in the midst of unimaginable tragedy.

Killings - In the Bedroom review by CP Customer
is the title of the story the movie is based on. Don't expect a killing spree, however. It starts fairly quiet, so patience is needed before you really realize what this is about. The movie title is quite misleading - maybe on purpose?! Great acting from well-known actors and an end which lets you wonder - as with many other independent films.

This is not a raunchy piece about bedroom intrigues but is a story about relationships between people, not just couples, but everyone. There are no car chases or massive CGI set pieces so if that's what you are looking for, look for another. If you like human drama and character development then this is more your cup of tea. Tom Wilkinson plays a man from Maine so a soft accent is fine. I often have troubles with the dialogue in American films as my hearing is not so good now, but I had no problems with this one, which is just as well as the dialogue is important. This could work in the theatre with minimal adaptation, but it is not static, in watching it you get drawn in and follow the action as it unfolds. Not a box office hit but an enjoyable film that is worth watching.
