Synopsis:
Drafted during Apartheid by the South African Army, Johan Niemand (Schalk Bezuidenhout) must set aside his love for Boy George and Depeche Mode in favour of more 'godly' music in order to land himself a spot in the SADF Choir - the 'Canaries'. In a landscape where law and religion oppress individuality, Johan and the Canaries have to survive military training and go on a nationwide tour. An unexpected romance on the battlefield forces Johan to reckon with his long-repressed sexual identity. This musical comedy revels in the discovery of finding your voice and learning to fly.

Stick with It - Kanarie review by WH

Great gay-themed film- but a tad over-long. A couple of the 'dream' sequences could have been cut. They added nothing to the movie- and in fact could put some folks off. For example the opening ' wedding dress' scene - during which we almost stopped the movie- was pointless. And there were other occasions when we just fast-forwarded through the self-indulgence. As a story of a young gay man in a very conservative and evangelical christian choir- it was great. And the singing and tunes are good too. Well worth sticking with until the very end dedication!

NB. Warning. This movie contains multiple scenes of flashing lights. Its like being strobed!

Interesting film about life for conscripts who are posted to South African Defence Force Choir and tour the country giving concerts and meeting the Afrikaans in the main, who attend their concerts and socialise afterwards.  Interesting the interplay from within the group and the fact that their superiors are men of the cloth gives an added twist to the story.  As the film evolves relationships begin, grow and end?  But also how the individual members also evolve over the course of the year.  Personally I think there are about 20-25 minutes of what I class as surplus material that could be culled and provide a much more cohesive narrative!

an enlightening film on every level about South Africa we've never seen not just on a gay level but a country that itself is closeted where a country that did not have tv's till the late seventies and was not aware of the of the worlds gay enlightenment and where young gay people were really in the closet in every sense of the meaning
