- Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Cannes, 'Kwaidan' features four nightmarish tales (adapted from Lafcadio Hearn's classic Japanese ghost stories) about mortals caught up in forces beyond their comprehension when the supernatural world intervenes in their lives. Breathtakingly photographed entirely on hand-painted sets, the film is an abstract wash of luminescent colours from another world.

Lovely - Kwaidan review by LC
A beautifully shot portmanteau of ancient Japanese ghost stories. It's pretty long, and slow and ponderous, but this all adds to the atmosphere. The stages interiors are beautiful to look at, and it also has a wonderful soundtrack that adds to the other worldliness of the film. Not one for "horror" fans, but definately worth watching.

Classy and strange - Kwaidan review by CD
I thoroughly enjoyed all the stories. The background artwork is stunning and the attention to detail and the careful pacing of each story is a relief after the directness of western films. A few of the actors are familiar from other Japanese epics such as the Seven Samurai
