"Especially in an English village - turn over a stone, you have no idea what will crawl out", spinster detective Miss Marple tells Inspector Craddock during their first meeting over tea and crumpets. Agatha Christie's most popular character has her own techniques to deal with such mysteries: thorough observation, polite questioning, a keen insight into the human mind - and the reassuring click of knitting needles. Joan Hickson played the amateur sleuth, Miss Marple, from 1984 to 1992. Her portrayal of Jane Marple is widely considered to be the finest and has earned her two BAFTA nominations. The village of St. Mary Meads is buzzing. A filmstar, played by Claire Bloom, has moved into Gossingron Hall. Fleeing a troubled past which has left her in a fragile state, she is due to make a come-back. At her garden party, an unwelcome guest sours the occasion for Marina whose sudden look of shock is likened to the Lady of Shalot.
