Cassius Clay (renamed Muhammad Ali after his controversial conversion to Islam) was, quite simply, the greatest boxer of the twentieth century, a sportsman who overcame the traumas of his childhood to make his mark in the ring through an awesome combination of showmanship and superb technical grace.
