Synopsis:
"My Golden Days" is a semi-autobiographical prequel to Desplechin's My Sex Life...Or How I Got into an Argument. Paul Dedalus looks back on his early years with newcomer Quentin Dolmaire as Paul the adolescent. He (Mathieu Amalric) remembers a trip to the USSR, where a clandestine mission led him to offer up his own identity to a young Russian, whom he considers a phantom twin for the remainder of his life. He remembers himself at nineteen in Roubaix, his sister Delphine (Ivy Dodds), his cousin Bob (Theo Fernandez), the parties with Penelope (Clemence Le Gall), Mehdi (Yassine Douighi) and Kovalki (Pierre Andrau), the friend who was to betray him.
He remembers University life in Paris, but most of all, he remembers Esther (Lou Roy-Lecollinet), a beautiful, rude, haughty soul and the love of his life.

Can someone help me,please? - My Golden Days review by Promessi

Spoiler Alert

This film not bad but has baffled me more than somewhat. Incidentally, the English translation of the title is itself a disaster : the French "Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse" encapsulates the structure of the whole piece and thereby helps us navigate.

Early on the film is promising. Excellent use of flashbacks. We first meet Paul aged 50 who is arrested as he returns to France from the middle east -- suspicions are afoot of espionage. At least I think that's it. But the questioning of Paul,I nearly said interrogation, is preceded by a caption "Russie" (this is on the original film not the sub-title) . Now, this makes no sense whatsoever for several reasons which I won't bore you with -- suffice to say one of them is that he has diplomatic immunity. The only solution I can come up with is that the caption is a mistake.Do put me right if all this is my stupidity!

But it gets worse. On the deduction that the questioning is not in "Russie" but takes place in La Belle France....this storyline is just abandoned, left hanging. The promising film becomes a film about a boy/girl open love realationship. On that level it's not bad. Some evidence of real thought and a certain amount of style.

But cut it how you like 6/10 is the most I'll give it.
