An old Soviet classic rom-com - Office Romance review by TC

I'm biased because this film has a sentimental value for me. I grew up in the Soviet Union so this is a film from my childhood. Having watched it again recently, I was pleased that it has not aged much. It gives you a very good idea of what it was like living in the Soviet Union in the middle of the stagnation period. The film carefully avoids any politics, which would not be allowed, but still touches upon bureaucracy and servility. In fact, I watched Nine to Five (1980) for the first time and found it surprisingly resembling Office Romance (1977)! But of course Office Romance is much more slow moving as romance takes centre stage. A non-Russian speaker may lose out on some of the intricacies of the lyrics but I feel that the soundtrack would be still enjoyable - English translation of the songs is provided at the bottom of the screen and the melodies are quite beautiful (at least to my ear).
