Synopsis:
The amazing TV broadcast offered her presents one of the best trios Oscar Peterson ever had, with bassist Ra Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen. This formation played together from 1958 (when Thigpen replaced electric guitar player Herb Ellis, as the previous Oscar Peterson trio consisted of piano, guitar and bass) to 1965, when Thigpen left the trio and was replaced by Louis Hayes. The trio plays superbly on this London program, in front of a live audience, and Peterson displays his amazing technique in such fast tunes as the fantastic "Place St. Henri" - one of his four original compositions performed at this concert.
The program's inclusion of Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debby" is particularly interesting, considering that Evans' and Peterson's pianistic styles were so dissimilar. Anyway, what we have here is certainly not Oscar copying Bill; instead, he reinterprets the wonderful waltz in his own personal way. Another of the show's highlights is the performance of "Yours is My Heart Alone" (originally "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz") from the operetta "Das Land des Lachelns" by Franz Lehar (1870-1948). Oscar makes it really jazzy! Another classical touch comes at the end of "My One and Only Love", when the pianist subtly quotes the melody of "Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring", from Johann Sebastian Bach's famous Cantata BWV 147. As bonus tracks we have added four tunes taken from the "Nat 'King' Cole TV Show", in which the earlier edition of the Oscar Peterson Trio joins Nat and some outstanding horn players including Colemar Hawkins, Stan Getz and Roy Eldridge.
