Synopsis:
This volume records the German drive into the oil fields of the Caucasus, which proved to be one of the high points of Hitler s military adventures. Starting in July 1942 and lasting almost 2 years, Hitler launched this attack after his failure to seize Moscow under the code name Operation Edelweiss. Hitler sought control of the region s oil supplies and, if successful, Hitler would have had the fuel he needed to unleash a global war that could have lasted for decades.
A German force of over 150,000 troops, 5,000 guns and 1,000 tanks moved into the area in an attempt to capture the precious resources but by the end of 1943 and into 1944 the Red Army had weathered the storm and managed to fight back the German advances. The German Propaganda Kompanien (PK) captured the events of Hitler s war on every front. Their footage was used to produce Die Deutsche Wochenschau, a weekly cinema newsreel detailing the events of World War II on land, sea and air. For the first time these unique primary source films have been collated, edited and translated into English in order to produce a complete military history of the Third Reich drawn exclusively from German primary sources. This amazing range of films captures the events of World War II exactly as they were presented to contemporary cinema audiences while the actions on the battlefield were still unfolding.
