The Great War documents the first world wide conflict; From the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand to the armistice on 11th November, 1918. In between, millions perished at Ypres, Verdun, the Somme and globally. It saw the introduction of the tank, the airplane, submarine warfare and the use of poison gas; And on the home front the women's Army Auxiliary Corps and the first air raids. The first phase of WWI, known as the "Battle of the Frontiers" included the efforts of the British expeditionary Force at Mans, the regrouping of the British and French at Marne and the brilliant victory by the Germans at Tannenberg. The second phase "The Race for the Sea" saw both sides attempting to outflank their enemies but by Christmas a stalemate was reached and trench warfare characterised the conflict. - Studio:
