Synopsis:
The second series of the BBC's 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' starring Richard E. Grant.

1. Ennui
The Pimpernel (Richard E. Grant) makes yet another daring rescue from under the noses of the French, this time saving Annette de Martignac (Emily Bruni), but has to leave her aged parents behind. Philippe Lispard (Stuart Bunce), a young official at the French Embassy, is very taken with her and she sees that he could be very useful to her in her attempts to get her parents free. He agrees to be a go between but says he must have something in return. Annette offers him the identity of the Scarlet Pimpernel in exchange for her parents' freedom.
2. Friends and Enemies
In Paris, inventor Antoine Picard (Anton Lesser) and his sister Francoise (Joanna Roth) make a momentous discovery; they identify oxygen. They are celebrating their achievement when the Republican guard arrives to arrest them. Francoise escapes with Antoine's notes. Picard is brought before Robespierre (Ronan Vibert) who orders him to work on some plans for an incendiary device. Robespierre believes that Picard's work with combustion would enable them to produce a bomb. Picard refuses to co-operate and is sentenced to die at the guillotine. The Scarlet Pimpernel mounts a spectacular rescue of Picard using a small bomb created by Francoise.
3. A Good Name
At the court of the Prince of Wales (Jonathan Coy), new emigre Claudette (Caroline Carver) recounts her daring rescue by the Scarlet Pimpernel and she captivates Lord Sidney (Mark Umbers). However, Sir Percy Blakeney (Richard E. Grant) mocks the story and its hero. His cynicism at the Pimpernel's exploits enrages Lord Sidney and he challenges Sir Percy to a duel. But, on the morning of the duel, Lord Sidney is kidnapped and everyone is of the opinion that Percy is responsible. Percy realise he has no choice but to go to France to free Lord Sidney himself if the Scarlet Pimpernel is to keep his "Good Name''.
