- Edgar Selwyn helmed this tearjerker about naive French lass Madelon Claudet (Helen Hayes), who falls for an American artist, only to be cast aside when she ends up pregnant. Things go from bad to worse when she's charged as a jewel thief's accomplice and lands in jail. Released after 10 years, Madelon secretly provides financial support for her son the only way possible: by selling herself on the streets.
