Winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, director Alice Rohrwacher's film is a beautiful and bittersweet love letter to the disappearing traditions of rural Italy. On her family's farm in the quiet and beautiful Italian countryside, twelve-year-old Gelsomina divides her time between watching out for her sisters and helping her father with his bee-keeping. One day their peaceful existence is interrupted when television competition 'Countryside Wonders' and its glamorous host (Monica Bellucci) arrive, offering tantalising rewards for the most traditionally-ltalian produce. Gelsomina is eager to enter the family and their pure golden honey, but faces resistance from her father who is more concerned with the bureaucracy threatening to derail their family business. - Actors:

Slow storyline, beguiling movie - The Wonders review by BE
Slow paced and lovely to watch. Consummate and natural acting by all of the family members. Even the little camel did well! Enjoyed very much.

Pretentious, plotless, pretty nonsense full of bees and honey for tea on a TV show... - The Wonders review by PV
How this won first prize at Cannes I don't know - but they have lauded dross over the years.
This is all pretty to watch, especially if you like bees and honey! Pretty Italian countryside. Non-credible tacked on reality TV plot.
Watch the EXCELLENT 2012 Spanish film 'Reality' all about reality TV instead. That is 5 stars.

not Wonderful - The Wonders review by SC
I was attracted more by the image on the cover than the description of the plot. I didn't get the film from CP, but bought it elsewhere. However, the girl on the cover is not actually in the film. The film centers around 12 year old Gelsomina, whose is tall and has long dark hair. The plot is vague and doesn't appear to be realistic. The game show host wears a Viking helmet and has a wig of very long plaited white hair, and makes me wonder if this had any basis in reality anywhere at all.
