The Viking Age ran from the late-eighth to the mid-eleventh century and describes the period of Scandinavian expansion and exploration that saw them raid, trade and settle in regions from the East Coast of North America to the Black Sea and Constantinople. They are often portrayed as bloodthirsty pirates whose only interest was murder, rape and pillage but, whilst that was undoubtedly a part of their lives, modern scholarship has shown them to also be superb seafarers and navigators, skilful traders, master craftsmen, dedicated farmers and the creators of magnificent epic sagas of the highest literary quality.
