Synopsis:
After the end of the First world War, Jack Ford returns to his home town of Gallowshields on Tyneside. it is a time of economic depression, however Jack is not one to suffer. Newly elected as the District Secretary for the Fitter's Union he appoints his brother-in-law Matt Hedley as his deputy. Once Jack starts his new job as District Secretary he has to contend with divisions within his own union and meets up with his old friend, Sir Horatio Manners. Tom is released from prison, however when a Scottish stranger comes looking for him and Jack there is going to be trouble. Billy returns home as a qualified doctor whilst Jack has a visit from an old army pal who is in trouble.
Tom has moved out of home and into the local working man's hostel where he meets a Russian who is looking for Sergeant Ford. Les Mallow wants Jack to help him expose a local scandal and secure him a place on the Council - he is prepared to use any means to get Jack on his side.
