Finding Your Feet

National treasures in lightweight predictable sctipt

This might have made a decent TV play. 45 mins or so. But as a film, it is was boring and predictable with an rosy eyed view of poorer British living conditions and even dementia.

The attempt to address Timothy Spall's character as a tragic torn husband whose wife is in a care home with dementia is to be applauded. However, and appreciating it was a side plot, he is torn because his wife does not recognise him and gets agitated when he visits. And so decides not to visit her again. As if that is a clean break. "I've said last goodbye." it just doesn't work like that, emotionally, legally or financially.

The run down housing estate where Imelda Staunton moves to after discovering her husband having an affair with herself best friend, may have appeared rough but had none of the sense of desparation tion that exists every day. There are youth's hanging around near the block, but no one seems to afraid to go out or leavers their car there. Honest, that is just not true.

Why did Staunton not just throwing hubble out? Obviousness answer. Then film was full of kind hearted "poor" people. It was all so not real. But the poor lived in places like Little Venice. Spall's ageing Bedford van said "classic" rather than just managing the handyman who would have drive a transit.

Humour was missing. Almost all as if a Carry One film tried to be a social commentary.

Grand Tours of Scotland's Lochs: Series 1

Actually quite interesting

Despite thinking this was a mis-spelling of Merton I found Paul Murton's guide to the lochs pretty good. A few places we recognised and yet were still pleasantly surprised to find out interesting new tales. He even mentions the midgies.

The Endless

Worth persevering Sci-fi movie

The producers/writers/actors made a decent job with a small budget. Two brothers return to the camp/cult they escaped from a decade before. It turns out not to be as bad as they remember as young men. After a night some uncanny events come up which everyone else thinks is normal. Soon they encounter some mysteries in which one layer is lifted to reveal another reality. Piece by piece the viewer and protagonists are shown the truth behind the idyllic camp.

Midnight, Texas: Series 1

A bit boring and predictable

I tried listening to the audio book and just found it filled with clich├ęs. Unfortunately the TV show is actually worse. The script makes wooden actors of a talented cast. Gave up after episode 2

The Whispering Star

Art house style - not much happens

Having been a fan of Japanese slow burn films like Departures and Shall We Dance I looked forward to Whispering Star. The low budget acclaimed movie was a disappointing drag. Not a lot happens once the novelty of the house shaped cargo spaceship wears off. There is one (good) actress and a childlike computer voice. That's about it.

Black Panther

Rubbish plot but good acting and world building

Firstly I note some of the comments above about stereotyping. But I think that the writers intended that an African nation should show resentment towards previous colonial powers to the extent that they even call Americans "colonisers". So it fitted the world building. The acting was pretty good throughout and the accents felt genuine and refreshing. The African style dress, high rise towers and planes were original. I really liked that.

The plot was silly and left lots of loose ends. It seemed to be lifted from H. Rider Haggard. A bit She, a bit King Solomon's Mines. But put that aside and it was a bit of fun that entertained me.

I, Tonya

Quite humerous biopic

A different Margot Robbie in this biopic based on interviews of all the characters in Hardings later skating life. Alison Janney is also convincing as Hardings disturbing mother. This news story had passed me by and so it was all new to me. The fourth wall was often broken by direct lines to the audience. All in all this was a decent film that kept me interested

The Shape of Water

Gave up after ten minutes

I just did not find the film engaging. A couple of the scientists seemed to be reading their lines from an autocue. It was just not interesting

Whisky Galore!

Quite a poor adaptation of Compton MacKenzie's book and the Ealing Film

Compton MacKenzie was a prolofic and talented Scottish author whose works have been adapted for film and TV. Whiskey Galore and The Monarch of the Glen are probably the two most famous. The first is loosely based on the sinking of SS Politician which sank off Islay with a cargo of alcohol destined for the West Indies.

In the Ealing Films version it was played very much in the slapstick style and thanks to some great British character actors became a much loved success. Unfortunately, the remake cannot decide whether to be true to the book or the earlier film and as a result has the charm of neither. As a previous reviewer said, some of the characters needed work, but also, in my view, did the sets. It felt low budget, almost made for TV with indoor or restricted shots. No sense of the grandeur of the Isle or the remoteness of the location. at the time of the events, there were no decent roads to the Inner Hebrides and so the community really was isolated. The villagers could never see why their locawhen there were few decent roads to the Inner Hebrides. This is something the Ealing film achieved.

There is on tour an all female cast version and it is much better than this film on a thousandth of its budget

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

OK but a bit confusing

Given the modern setting, I could not understand why the openly brutal police were not all over the press, internet and social media. The characters seemed to have modern(ish) phones. So the premise falls at the first hurdle. Were there any other real people in this town? It seems not. Other than extras they don't make much of an appearance. What saves it is Frances McDormand's convincing acting and Woody Harrelson's desperate sheriff. There was the occasional laugh and the odd bit of suspense and that stopped this getting lower ratings

A Ghost Story

Dull long and pretentious

This film was constructed of a lot of slow, slow scenes. There was no plot really. Just slow scenes. Empty rooms and cameras panning across them. People doing normal things as if it might matter to the story. For example the woman spends five minutes putting out rubbish in a long shot of the garden path. Several reviewers have commented on the slow pie eating scene. This is a great spoof of how to make a movie

Chinese Puzzle

Gave up after fifteen minutes

I like just about every actor in this film, but I just could not get into the film itself. It felt like a waste of talent, and oddly did not feel French to me, The film had all these gorgeous people in it and it felt like that was all they were doing, being gorgeous.

Happy End

Dull

The film starts with each character, unintroduced and separate. It takes a while but eventually it becomes clear who belongs where and what the relationship is. And thats it. That is all. Nothing much more. Nada.

The Fairy

Quite likeable physical comedy

I found the film to be quite funny and we watched as a family which made it more enjoyable. The comedy is mostly physical although there is some dialogue. Sometimes the plot got a little lost or opaque. But that did not really matter.

Silver Linings Playbook

Tried three times to watch this

I tried three times to watch this and see why it got god reviews and I really could get past ten minutes. The characters are unsympathetic and seem to behave illogically. There seems to be no humour and I am lost as to why it gets positive reviews
