Van Gogh and Japan

an unknown side to van gogh

(Edit) 02/12/2020

This documentary is superb. You feel like you really begin to understand Van Gogh's art and what inspired him. The film is sensitive

to the isolation he felt and the urgency he felt in trying to produce art that represented reality. It is a beautiful well produced film and introduces an audience to so much that perhaps we in the UK do not know about his passion for Japan and Japanese art and the symmetry and paradox of Japanese society decades later returning this passion to embrace his art.

A stunning film. Just read the review below and we had no similar problems so perhaps this is a new disc.

Funny Cow

I liked this film

(Edit) 10/04/2019

Despite the other critical reviews as a big fan of Maxine Peake I really enjoyed this film despite the very dark subject. I think it showed domestic violence and its debilitating effects on self esteem - particularly on the mother - very well, and the fact that the main character could not establish real relationships. Her ability to make people laugh saved her but the cost was being alone.

I agree some of the characters are not fleshed out - but overall there is a lot in this film about women's resilience so don't be put off and give it a go.
