At last a film that begins to do justice to England's greatest composer, positioning him as so much more than the author of A Lark Ascending and "Greensleeves"; a complex and troubling portrayal of a complex and often troubled man. If I withhold a final star it's because arguably Palmer over-eggs the pudding with gratuitous imagery designed to reinforce the message about the serious and sombre tone of some of the composers weightiest music; I'm not sure that film of starving children illuminates either the music or the plight of those seen. Nevertheless, a very strong recommendation.
One of the few Ken Russells without stripping Nuns, crucifixes, Nazis, S&M etc. Simply told and simply shot - quite simply one of the classics!
Loved this series as a kid, but it hasn't aged well; great comic ideas, but the sketches are SLOW...ok, I know it's for kids, but even as a child I seem to recall thinking "get on with it"! Nice to see old friends again though...
