Double bill of documentaries about the world of Russian ballet. 'The Bolshoi in Vegas' follows the world-renowned ballet company's disastrous 1996 US tour. The company's first trip to America, in 1959, had been a political and artistic triumph, with audiences queueing for days to see them perform. But the 1996 tour, in which they had hoped to capitalise on their former success, is beset with problems from the start. Tensions mount, and the Bolshoi are bewildered by their lukewarm reception. 'Kirov in Petersburg' traces the development of an institution.
As Communism gives way to Capitalism and artistic values give way to commercial considerations, the Kirov Ballet's chief choreographer Oleg Vinogradov's final year in office is set against allegations of bribery and corruption. Through the personal recollections of workers, dancers and critics, backstage footage and previously unseen archive material, a unique portrait emerges of the Kirov's changing fortunes in the context of its awesome heritage.
