Synopsis:
The Lake District is one of the most spectacular areas in the country and we explore it on a variety of sprinters. We start our journey at Carnforth which was built as a meeting point of the London and North West, the Midland and the Furness railway. From Carntorth, served by Class 86 and 87 EMU's, we head north to Oxenhohne, junction for the branch line to Windermere and then on to Kendal. At Kendal, a town of many historical buildings and bridges, we alight and visit its castle.
Back on the train, we travel along the Kentmere Valley to Windermere where we stop at the Steamboat Museum with its unique collection of historic steamboats and motorboats, after which we pass through Bowmess and Ambleside before travelling on the I taverthwaite Branch railway. Next our tour takes us 011 the Cumbrian Coast Line past Grange over Sands, Cartmel with its beautiful priory through Kents Banks and Cark and on to Ulverston. Here the line climbs steeply to Barrow-in-Furness and we join the Furness Railway and the branch line to Eskdale. At Eskdale we have the opportunity to view a selection of steam locos including Northern Rock 2-6-2, River lrt 0-8-2 and River Mite 2-8-2. To complete our circle, we change at Carlisle for the West Coast main line and head past Shap summit, into the Lune Valley and up into the Howgill Fells.
