Synopsis:
Roy Buchanan is still regarded as "the world's best unknown guitarist" to this day. The Rolling Stones wanted him to replace Brian Jones, and Eric Clapton asked him to play the guitar for Derek & The Dominos - but he turned down both offers. Roy Buchanan was a true master of the Fender Telecaster guitar; and his playing technique significantly influenced musicians such as Gary Moore and Jeff Beck. Roy Buchanan grew up in California, which is also where he learned to play the guitar. He moved to Los Angeles when he was a teenager and played in the band Heartbeats with Spencer Dryden (who later became the drummer of Jefferson Airplane).
After this, he went on tour with Dale Hawkins and played with Robbie Robertson (The Band) who described Buchanan as one of his main influences. In the sixties Roy Buchanan married, moved to Washington DC and worked as a studio musician for more than one hundred album productions - mostly for Freddy Cannon and Leiber/Stoller. His first solo album was only released in 1971 and which led to the result that he and his inimitable playing of the Fender Telecaster was a well-kept secret among the likes of John Lennon, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones. Despite this reputation and the huge success he experienced in the seventies, Buchanan felt restricted in the creativity granted to him by the record companies. In 1981 he decided to go on a four year break. The albums he recorded from 1985 onwards, "When A Guitar Plays The Blues" (1985), "Dancing On The Edge" (1986) and "Hot Wires" (1987) represent the highlights of his career - and are also the albums Buchanan himself was most satisfied with. This Rockpalast concert was recorded at the Markthalle in Hamburg on February 24, 1985 - just three years before his tragic suicide - with Martin Stevenson (vocals), John Steele (guitar, keyboards), Anthony Dumm (bass) and Martin Yula (drums). It is a performance that shows Roy Buchanan's genius on the guitar in an extremely unique way - especially with his brilliant covers by artists including Jimi Hendrix or Don Gibson. It is no secret, however, that Roy Buchanan was particularly able to present his outstanding talents during his live performances - most of which were unfortunately not recorded. Fans who loved his album "Live in Japan" will also enjoy these momentous recordings! An impressive legacy!
