Synopsis:
At the height of the British Raj in the late nineteenth century Franklin Prestage, agent of the East Bengal Railway, proposed what many thought was impossible - a track running from the humid plains of Siliguri to the alpine heights of Darjeeling. Over a hundred years later the famous 'Toy Train' is still steaming up the Himalayas to the same destination, following the same route and utilising the same ingenious loops and zig zags. Though threatened with closure on numerous occasions the line has now been granted 'World Heritage' status, thus guaranteeing it a secure future. But it is not just the steam train itself that provides endless fascination.
This programme takes you on a journey like no other; in which two histories are forever intertwined. A journey of mystery and romance whose ascent reveals an ever-changing landscape and people. A journey which ends in a place reminiscent of the mythical Shangrila...
