Strictly Ballroom

A snapshot of Australian ballrom dancing, but so much more

(Edit) 04/06/2020

At first glance, this may look like a tacky production about ballroom dancing of all things, but stick with it and it's so much more. The film has a lovely flow to it, with sudden changes as the plot evolves. The way the film explores how shallow a lot of folks are, going with the flow, keeping the boring old status quo, not rocking the boat. The film shows the pain, but also the potential huge rewards for daring to be different, both in life and in love. The film's use of the ballroom dancing world allows the real world to be put to one side, allowing the viewer to focus on the human traits - goood and bad.

Perhaps it helps to be a child of the '80's and of a certain frame of mind, but this is my favourite film. It's uplifting. I saw the great actor Ralph Richardson interviewed shortly before his death and he said it was one of his favourite fims. If it was good enough for Ralph, it's good enough for me.
