Once

An Irish love Story?

(Edit) 06/05/2008

So, not a lot happens, and you have to listen to a number of songs all the way through, so you got to like the music. And length-wise it is more like a good Play of the Month. Those are the downsides. The positives,of which there are lots, start with the characters. All likeable, well acted in the sense that you think they are playing themselves, and a story which avoids all those american "cliches".And it is happy--the humour gentle and the two central players you care for and like--you want them to make the right calls, and for God to look down and take care of them. So take it out, enjoy it and think that there have been some interesting films coming out of the ould country recently-and this is up there as one of the nicest.

The Disappearance of Finbar

A little gentle gem

(Edit) 15/06/2007

Nice to come across a film that you expect not too much of but turns out to be entertaining and interesting. At the start it is the typical Dublin boys, and it drifts along with a few laughs and some nice touches. Finbar himself would seem like little loss, not the greatest of craic, but the film takes off when the search for the missing"hero"moves outside Ireland. The odd-ball characters are nicely drawn and the whole film takes on a different rather quirky style. Worth staying through the first half hour and reminds you that good films are not all big budget.

Raise the Red Lantern

Film school material

(Edit) 10/07/2007

The picture quality of this is not too good, and for those looking for an action film,go elsewhere. This is all about telling the story through looks, camera angles, lighting that sets a sense of place, and must make a fantastic study of film making techniques. When the fourth wife arrives the other three each greet her in differing ways, and the setting all takes place within the confines of the rooms and roof of the masters residence. It is a wonderfully made experience and quite delightful to see a picture drawn slowly and with a sense of character. Notice that the master plays a subservient role and you hardly see his face. Would get four stars except for the quality of the pictures.
