Synopsis:
1923. A teenage Shunpei Kim arrives in Osaka by boat from Korea and is determined to be a success but at the expense of his family and employees. His ruthless, brutal bullying turns him into a wealthy businessman running first a fishcake factory and then operating as a loan shark, but he also becomes into a monstrous figure of the small community. As the decades go by, despite the destructive effect on his wife, his children, even his mistress, he remains the same belligerent person until his eventual unrepentant death in old age. Epic in scale but intimate in style, Blood and Bones is a tense but powerful portrait of an unlikable man, with a career-best performance from Takeshi Kitano.
Director Yoichi Sai captures the atmosphere of six decades of personal history set against a backdrop of tumultuous times for Korean and Japanese relationships, its historical scale matching the grandeur of Bertolucci.
