Dieppe
The plan was to make an assault on the town of Dieppe. It was hoped the raid would demonstrate the growing strength of the Allies, serve as a test run for future invasions of Europe and take some pressure off the Eastern Front. Unfortunately, the attack was a disaster. The soldiers were intended to arrive early in themoming under the cover of darkness, they were delayed. Instead they had to approach the cliffs of Dieppe fully visible to the Germans waiting for them. The losses were extreme.
DunkirkCut off in north-east France by a German armoured advance to the Channel coast at Calais, the allies were cornered. With the navy unable to supply enough ships for a successful rescue, Vice-Admiral Bertram Ramsay amazingly called on the help of civilians to provide all spare vessels for the operation. Once in Dunkirk these small boats were able to pull off a rescue mission that even the British Navy was unable to accomplish and became immortalised as one of the greatest rescue missions in history. - Actors:
