Synopsis:
With the opera "Hansel and Gretel" Engelbert Humperdinck became world famous and at the same time put in a drawer: pleasing fairy tale operas, family-friendly, folk song-like. His tragic fairy tale "Königskinder" stands in stark contrast to this with its socially critical subtext (the juxtaposition of strong social differences) and has only been revived in recent years, most recently with the grandiose staging by Christof Loy at the Dutch National Opera. The doomed love between a goose girl and a prince - who fight against prejudice and are hampered by magic - ends in their love death, a rebuke to the villagers who rejected them.
