Synopsis:
Nina Simone is recognized throughout the world as one of the legendary vocalist's of all time. Originally trained as a classical pianist, she has an incredible singing repertoire ranging from Gospel music to African, Blues to Ellington, Classical to Folk.

A piano prodigy at four, Ms Simone began formal music studies at the Juilliard School of Music in New York and at Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music with Vladmir Sokoloff. She spent her formative years living in Philadelphia and, in the summer of 1954, while playing the piano at an Irish bar in Atlantic City, she was suddenly told to sing. At that moment, the twenty-one year old classical pianist named Eunice Waymon stepped into the limelight and became Nina Simone. Within a few years she began recording, and rose swiftly to the top of the charts to gain international stardom. Nina Simone is admired for her highly emotional and expressive delivery. Her voice has an unusually deep, rich timbre, evoking and stirring her listeners' emotions in a skilful and varied fashion. She created such hits as 'I Love You Porgy from Porgy and Bees', Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, 'I put A Spell On you' and 'My Baby Just Cares for me'. Ms.Simone is well known for her outspoken opinions on civil rights issues. One of the best-known protest songs, four women was banned in America as 'insulting to Black People' but she is credited with the popular Young, Gifted and Black, that became the Black National anthem. Nina Simone candidly narrates the story of her life and her heart-felt beliefs in this unique documentary.
