Steve Smith: Drum Legacy: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants (2006)

Musical instruction from jazz drummer Steve Smith and a performance from his band Jazz Legacy. Studying the giants who came before is one of the keys to developing an understanding of music and finding your own voice on the drums. This set presents a musical analysis and a discussion, between Steve and fellow drummer John Riley, of some of the most important jazz drumming greats in history. The two friends provide a historical and artistic analysis of each jazz giant's conceptual approach, right down to the nuts and bolts of the licks they played. Also included is the complete one-hour performance by Steve's group Jazz Legacy from the 2006 Modern Drummer Festival.
