The Fausto Coppi Story – Il Vero Fausto: Fausto Coppi was one of the most exciting and charismatic cycling champions of all time. His superior skills, an affinity for racing, and his fierce competitiveness gave notice from the very start of his career that he was destined for greatness. In 1949, his seventh year as a professional, Coppi took an incredible nine firsts, including both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. Thereafter, he was called by countrymen and fans across the world of pro cycling as "Il Campionissimo", literally "The Greatest Champion." This champion of champions dominated the sport through the 1940's and 1950's as thoroughly as later legends Jacques Anquetil and Eddy Merckx did during their careers. Coppi's private life was full of drama; his relationship with a woman the tabloid press dubbed "The White Lady" made him at once both the most revered and most reviled racer in Italy during the 1950's. His sudden death from an unexpected attack of malaria in 1960 brought a premature end to an exceptional life.
Jacques Anquetil – The Man, the Mystery, the Legend: This remarkable film penetrates the myth surrounding the five time winner of the Tour de France, who "did for cycling what Mozart did for music" ! Anquetil was a prococious talent, inventing a new style - rounded, aerodynamic and apparently easy - that was ahead of its time. Anquetil elevated time-trialling to a new level and set the standard for his generation. In addition to his many victories - Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, Classics - it was his courage and his persistence that we discover in this superbly made film. It portrays a wonderful athlete but a very mysterious man. Haunted by the spectre of lonliness and death, superstitious and shy, the five time Tour de France winner was also a hell-raiser and bon viveur. Unique in cycling he could party, drink champagne, wine and spirits and smoke all night and then win a race the following day. Carefully researched and full of valuable first-hand accounts, notably from his first wife Janine, this film provides a fascinating and very moving insight into the myth surrounding one of cycling's greatest champions.
