Arnett Cobb was fifteen when he joined Louisiana band leader Frank Davis's band, worked with trumpeter Chester Boone whom he left to play with Milton Larkin in 1936. In 1942 accepted an offer from Lionel Hampton to take Illinois Jacquet's seat in his famous band and within a short time Hampton re-recorded his theme song, "Flying Home No. 2," with Cobb as the featured soloist, and the excitement elicited by his uninhibited, blasting style earned him the label "Wild Man of the Tenor Sax."

A powerful, gritty player, drenched in the blues, Cobb is an outstanding member of the distinguished school of "Texas tenors." His sound, shifting constantly between breathy confidentiality and eruptive, emotion-packed roars, brought pleasure to many who could never imagine from his playing the grave physical discomfort which he courageously disguised for more than 30 years.
