This is great film with some of British cinema's leading actors in it. Who doesn't like Bill Nighy..??? Or Gemma Arterton..?? It is uncomplicated and an easy "watch" but is no less for being so - the story is straightforward and shows another side to people that were behind the scenes of WWII and not dodging bullets on the front line. ASs others have said elsewhere, the stereotypical image of the women staying at home was being quashed as the ravages of war demanded more from civilian society. Arterton's character had to push herself forward to be considered worthy of the position she eventually made her own. In the wider context of her character's striving for recognition, look at how British women excelled themselves in WWII, working in armaments factories, delivering Spitfires and Hurricanes to airfields, etc.
This film acknowledges the grit, determination, sacrifice and dedication that women displayed to support the war effort during Britain's moment of need.
Excellent film...
