Synopsis:
Inside Steam If you've ever wondered what makes the steam traction engine tick, then this video explains it all. Traction engines in all of their forms, can be seen at any of the hundreds of steam rallies held across the country every summer which honour their role in our past, and celebrate their preservation. The most recognisable form the steam road roller, is joined by other examples such as the ploughing engine, the portable engine and more, that were all built in Britain's great Industrial Age for a special purpose such as ploughing or to provide the power for travelling fairground rides.
It's not all just coal and water everything from injectors to steering are studied in this special insight into these surviving grand old ladies of our working past. Take a nostalgic look back at Britain's industrial heritage and the commitment shown by the team's of enthusiasts who dedicate the time to painstakingly restore, display and show these classic vehicles from a bygone era. Steam Insight Today a vast variety of steam traction engines can be seen attending the numerous rallies and events staged annually around the country. They bear testimony to the hours of labour and vast amounts of money invested by a dedicated band of enthusiasts who strive to restore and preserve these relics from the past for future generations. In the second half of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century steam truly ruled supreme and those steam engines designed for use in agriculture and transport are today collectively referred to as traction engines. In this programme we examine the different types of traction engines which were designed and delivered to carry out specific tasks. We study portable engines, general purpose traction engines (sometimes referred to as agricultural engines or threshing engines), ploughing engines, road rollers, steam wagons, road locomotives, steam tractors and the magnificent showmans road locomotive. Traction Engines on the Road A huge number of rallies and events are staged annually around Great Britain to commemorate the important part traction engines played in our past, and to celebrate their preservation through to the present day. Their most common uses were for hauling, ploughing, use as a stationary power source and for transportation some may say they were the driving force behind the agricultural revolution when the only alternative prime mover was the work horse. This programme looks at the history of traction engines, their many uses and examines them through to present day where we see them regularly presented at steam fairs and rallies. More Traction Engines on the Road The importance of the traction engine to our past is huge it is for this reason that we see traction engines in all their varieties at so many rallies and fairs staged throughout the year. Following on from Traction Engines on the Road , this programme looks at the main variations of the traction engine and its many uses; from the larger than normal road locomotive designed for heavy haulage on public highways to the steam roller which is, by far, the most we the most well known of all. From the portable engine to the ploughing engine and from the steam tractors to the agricultural general purpose engine, we have them all in this programme!
