This video is a beginner's guide to learning British Sign Language and is for anyone, hearing or deaf, who is interested or wishes to learn sign language. It will be particularly useful to parents of deaf children and anyone with deaf relatives, friends, neighbours or colleagues. The video explains the grammar of British Sign Language and demonstrates how meaning is conveyed not just by the signer's hands but by other elements such as the face and body. Used correctly, the video will help the beginner to develop basic conversational skills, including concepts such as numbers (for age and money) and the expressing of time (both clock and calendar). The role of finger spelling is fully explained. As well as containing all the teaching material from the BBC Education Television series, this video also has additional sequences which have been specially made. The sound has also been subtitled so that the hard of hearing who do not sign can follow what's been said.
