Synopsis:
Famous for his impeccable precision and infectious swing feel, pianist Teddy Wilson was one of the major figures of the swing era. His recordings with Billie Holiday during the thirties and his long participation in Benny Goodman's small groups are among the few true jazz milestones. Although his numerous trio recordings never received as much attention as the aforementioned recordings, they are also fantastic, and exhibit the pianist's great timing and musicality. This outstanding video showcases Wilson in both a trio and a quartet setting, accompanying some of the most celebrated horn players in jazz history.
The musicians on tho opening show were in London to record a studio album with T-Bone Walker at the time, and agreed to appear on TV for this special performance. After a couple of tunes featuring Wilson's trio, the horn players were each given a showcase piece to display their extraordinary talent. The subsequent Denmark selections were part of a homage dedicated to tho late baron Timmo Rosenkrantz, who was a longtime Danish jazz fan that migrated to the United States, fell in love with afro-American singer Inez Cavanaugh and befriended many musicians (he had died on August 11. 1969). Ben Webster joined the trio for the telecast's second tune. The 1970 Stockholm TV broadcast presents Wilson with drummer Ed Thigpen, who was a member of the Oscar Peterson Trio for many years. Our last selection, which again features Ben Webster, is a poignant version of 'Old Folks' dedicated to alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges, who had died just a few months before, on May 11, 1970. Tears literally fell from Webster's face as he remembered his old pal from the Ellington band in this moving performance, which brings this fantastic release to a close.
