One of the fruits of Weill's collaboration with Berthold Brecht in the Weimar Republic, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, triggered a tremendous scandal on its Leipzig premiere in 1931. Despite Nazi demonstrations, the work was performed in Kassel, Prague, Frankfurt and, finally, Berlin, where it was performed over 50 times to huge acclaim.
This production hails from the 1998 Salzburg Festival, the thrilling cast headed by Gwyneth Jones as Begbick, Catherine Malfitano as Jenny Smith, and Jerry Hadley as Mahoney.
