A slight, but charming piece about a cantankerous, bedridden old bully and the deleterious effect he has on his shy, corpulent son's wooing of a neighbouring widow. At first the tone is light and semi-comic. Later, however, it shifts to a darker acknowledgement of complicitous emotional enslavement. Imaginatively shot, sensitively acted.
