Bros

Entertaining film for gay adults

(Edit) 23/04/2023

Nice to have mainstream standards of acting, direction and funding for a gay film. Very enjoyable romcom and, though it very much reflects the American gay experience, Brits will identify well enough. 90% of gay films seem to be about coming out, so it's nice to see one that adults who are on the scene (or used to be!) can identify with.

Shame it didn't make a wider commercial impact but TBH, good as it is, I'm not sure why it would interest many straights. (After all, I don't race to see straight Jenifer Aniston romcoms!)

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande

Tedious in the extreme

(Edit) 03/04/2023

Sexually hung up middle aged R.E. teacher seeks to lose her inhibitions with a young escort. Eventually, she does. That's it. Long tedious predictable and not helped by being claustrophobically set in a hotel room for 95% of the time. I'd rather have had a good kip than waste my time watching this despite it starring Emma Thompson. (Of course her performance is excellent but it doesn't make up for the lack of a story)

Sodom

If you like films where nothing happens . . .

(Edit) 20/09/2022

Well made and very well acted, but its basically just two days of soul searching dialogue between an out gay man who's now comfortable with his sexuality, and a soon to be married guy who is in denial about his. Ultimately it's also unrealistic - any guy would come out of the closet if offered the chance to be with the absolutely red hot Jo Weil.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Not even worth one star

(Edit) 09/08/2022

To make sense of who anyone is, and what kind of character they are, you have to have seen the first film - and pretty recently - plus various other Marvel products. If you don't have that background you'll soon tire of the fighting (which starts in the first second and continues seemingly endlessly) because you won't care who wins. That will give you time to 'marvel' at the CGI which no makes no pretence at even semi realism - it looks like a comic. I guess that should be little surprise but frankly Hanna Barbera could have made it look better. My heart goes out to Benedict Cumberbatch who must need the money.

Death on the Nile

Dull

(Edit) 05/07/2022

I enjoyed Murder on the Orient Express so expected to enjoy this. I didn't. Instead of sumptuous scenery there was poor CGI (maybe owing to shooting during lockdown, but if it's not possible to do it properly, don't do it). Few stars of any magnitude (as one expects with Agatha Christies). Hire French or hire Saunders (who was actually fairly good), but don't hire them both for the same film: it just makes you expect them to be funny and that's not what hey were there to do,. Overall it was dull. Those watching with me fell asleep.

Come to Daddy

Slightly comic, slightly horrific

(Edit) 11/02/2021

This film would be standard fare for the horror channel. and if you've seen that channel you'll know that most of its films aren't that frightening, are pretty cheap and often bloody. It's watchable, and has a plot that's not completely absurd but more plot and less gore would have improved it. If I had seen it (free) on the horror channel I'd maybe have given it 3 stars, but as a paid rental it's only 2.

The Shiny Shrimps

A joy to watch

(Edit) 08/11/2020

Lovely entertaining feel good film. You can be any age and anywhere on the sexual spectrum and you will enjoy it. Basically a mildly homophobic sportsman has to coach a team (a family really) of queens, and the entertaining experience improves everyone's lives.
