Life of Buddha

Factual & fascinating

(Edit) 04/11/2012

It accepts only what is actually recorded about the great man as actual fact. Some are presented, but you know they must not be taken literally, such as hundreds of arrows shot at him without even one striking him. It's low on dramatisation, with a few scenes minimally acted to convey events. Mostly examination of archeology & legacy of current Himalayan Buddhist life. Clearly a fine documentary, it does not pretend to be anything else.

Double Dhamaal

Even better than the first

(Edit) 13/10/2012

Dhamaal was funny & scenic, but this is even better. Great locations for stimulating visuals. Near the beginning, Javed Jaffrey loses his clothes then runs naked in the street with the first cover he could find: a cardboard box labelled 'out of order' at the front & 'no entry' behind. Don't expect the humour to tone down after that, as it keeps coming thick & fast. Loved it so much I'm gonna buy it.

Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya

A fair romp

(Edit) 13/10/2012

Colourfully filmed & fairly funny. The young heroine is very zany looking, which lends a lot of charisma. Very complex plot going off in all directions. Not one of Bollywood's best productions.

Veer

Vividly entertaining epic

(Edit) 06/03/2012

Lavish fictional historic costume drama with CGI effects to embellish the action. Salman Khan in his usual one-dimesional macho persona, but just take it with the entertainment experience. Romance courtesy of newbie Zarine Khan (no relation I hope). Very well filmed with lavish scenes desert, plus cgi embellished scenes of Victorian London. DVD is excellent render quality, so do not bother with the blu-ray, which freezes toward the end (I tried 2 copies).

De Dana Dan

Fair, chaotic slapstick farce

(Edit) 06/03/2012

Not the best script Akshay Kumar has had, but it's worth a chuckle. Nicely fast-paced with plenty of change of scene, set in Singapore. A nicely chaotic slapstick farce. One of those movies that's rendered nicely on dvd, but stunning on blu-ray.

Wanted

Good action flick

(Edit) 06/03/2012

You either love Salman Khan with his one-dimensional macho action, or you hate him. Well the action is well shot, with great effects if that's what you want. Some romance thrown in for wider appeal & a couple of good songs. DVD is good quality render.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa

Akshay Kumar......... & the rest

(Edit) 06/03/2012

Start watching this from halfway through when Akshay Kumar enters the scene & adds some life to proceedings. They should have brought him in at the start, as the other actors lend little. A nice suspense about a girl possesed by an evil spirit. Kumar adds the comedy. Oh well, at least they made half a good movie.

Eklavya: The Royal Guard

Fair drama with some action

(Edit) 06/03/2012

Saif Ali Khan in serious mode for a change. Nice plot & interplay between characters. Stunning scenery of ancient palace set in rolling green hills. Not brilliant, but fair game.

Mujhe Meri Biwi Se Bachaao

Average fast-paced comedy

(Edit) 06/03/2012

Not brilliant, but a continuous flow of slapstick gags. Centers around an obese female company director & her husband who desperately tries but fails to bump her off with many deliberate hazards, although she remains totally unaware of his intent throughout.

Do Jasoos

Dated but watchable

(Edit) 06/03/2012

Dated, cheesy happy-go-lucky private detective comedy with a laugh here & there, but not upto today's standard.

Salaam Namaste

Rent this now!!!!

(Edit) 06/03/2012

Top comedy, brilliantly over-acted in colourful style. Javed Jaffrey is a special treat as a Crocodile Dundee wannabee. Lavish Australian coast, mountain & city scenery.

Kambakkht Ishq

Top risque humour!!!!

(Edit) 06/03/2012

This broke new ground in India for crude but incredibly funny American humour. Basically watch it if you love all-out slapstick fun, don't if you are conservative. Glossy, colourful American scenery with a nice bit-part by Sly Stallone. DVD is poor quality, so rent blu-ray if possible.

Three Idiots

Clever, inventive & touching

(Edit) 06/03/2012

This comedy almost sets a new genre, with very clever, inventive humour. It also touches the heart with some very emotional incidents. Good quality dvd render too.

Dhamaal

Chees, colourful slapstick

(Edit) 06/03/2012

Not non-stop comedy, but had me cracking up a few times at the pure cheesy practical humour. Javed Jaffrey does not steal the show in his usual larger-than-life extravagance. Very crisp quality dvd with beautiful scenery in lavish colour.
