- Silent-film veteran Mary Pickford snagged the Academy Award for Best Actress with her first foray into talkies. The flirtatious behavior of flapper Norma Besant (Pickford), daughter of an affluent Southern doctor (John St. Polis), leads to trouble after she takes up with hotheaded bad boy Michael Jeffrey (John Mack Brown).
