Synopsis:
It can be said, without a shadow of a doubt, that Bobby Charlton is one of the best international footballers that the world has ever seen, as well as being one of the most talented English football players of all times. Despite being injured in his debut match for Manchester United against Charlton Athletic in 1956, he made an immediate impact scoring twice; United walking away with a 4 - 2 win. After 758 appearances, Charlton left United in May 1973 with an incredible 249 goals under his belt. The only player to have so far broken any of Charlton's United records is Ryan Giggs whose appearance at the 2008 UEFA Champions League final broke Charltons appearances for United.
Regardless of the fact he hasn't played for United in over 30 years, Charltons goal scoring record remains intact. As well as holding legendary unbroken records with United, Charlton also holds Englands goal scoring record as well, with 106 caps and 49 goals. Charlton was also part of the victorious 1966 World Cup winning England team beating West Germany in the final at Wembley 4 -2. However Charlton's footballing career was very nearly cut short after the Munich air disaster of 1958 (just two weeks before his international debut) Lucky Charlton, who was only 20 at the time, escaped with cuts to his head and severe shock, but not everyone was so lucky. 23 lives were tragically claimed that day including 7 of Charlton's teammates. According to Charlton himself, the crash remains one of the defining moments of his life. After his retirement, Charlton had a brief managerial career, and is still today involved in various charity projects across the world. Charlton was also invited to join the Manchester United board of directors where he remains to this day. Charlton has won a number of prestigious awards, such as BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 which was awarded to him by his brother Jack, receiving a standing ovation as he waited for his prize.
