These lessons have helped us better understand Bartok, Chopin, Shostakovich, Debussy, Fauré, Franck, Mendelssohn, Ravel and, more recently, Mozart.
At the same time, Zygel also regularly gives music lessons with an orchestra at the Maison de la Radio, during which he presents a particular work rather than a composer to younger audiences. For his first such Leçon de Musique, filmed in public with an orchestra, he chose to take a fine-toothed comb to Symphony No. 103 - The Drum Roll. In front of attentive children, who are at times fascinated and at others in stitches at his allusions, Zygel explains Haydn's famous piece step-by-step and in an easy, humorous manner, under the watchful eye of conductor Ton Koopman and the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, which illustrates each of his points. After presenting the drums and explaining the prologue and development of the first movement, Zygel explores the difference between major and minor keys, which alternate in the second movement, and highlights the specific characteristics of the minuet (third movement) before moving onto the richness of the final tutti passage. Each movement is therefore explained before being played in its entirety by the orchestra. As always, the music lesson ends with an interesting bonus, here devoted to the differences between Haydn and Mozart and to the Variations, plus a session where children ask questions of Zygel, Koopman and the orchestra's musicians. After spending 90 minutes in Zygel's company, you'll never listen to an orchestra in the same way again.
