Synopsis:
Between 1959 and 1968, railway enthusiast Michael Marsden recorded views and sounds of the rapidly changing face of Britain's rail network. For over twenty-five years after steam ended, he captivated audiences throughout the country with his unique film collection that captured the last decade of mainline steam and the full emergence of the diesel locomotive. The blending of this film, and that of other cameramen, with true sounds of the era plus an informative narrative has resulted in the creation of a fascinating programme.

Brakevan to Whitby
In this programme, some of North Yorkshire's long lost branch lines are looked at, the main feature being a ride on the daily pick-up goods train from Malton to Whitby on the 16th March 1965. We begin by following a Class J27 freight locomotive on the last operational pickup goods from Malton to Kirbymoorside via Gilling on Friday 7th August 1964. The line from Pilmoor Junction on the East Coast Main Line to Gilling is shown, with a Class B1 on a passenger train at Coxwold. Joining the pick-up goods once more at Malton, on this occasion hauked by a Class B1 locomotive, we travel on a glorious winter's day to Whitby, over what is now the North York Moors Railway. The final journey is a ride on a diesel multiple unit stopping train from Whitby to Scarborough down the much-missed coast line through Robin Hoods Bay. A look at passenger and freight operations in Scarborough concludes the programme. Filmed and recorded between 1962 and 1966.
