Hsu Chin-Yu is a female political prisoner of the White Terror in the 1950s. Hsu was born during the period of Japanese colonial rule, received a Japanese education, and worked as a female laborer in factories after graduation. After the KMT retreated to Taiwan, Hsu worked in the Taipei Post Office. Like most Taiwanese, Hsu spoke Japanese and had to attend mandatory Mandarin classes. Inspired by her Mandarin teacher Chi Mei-Chen, who was a modern woman and also a Chinese communist, Hsu led a protest demanding equal pay for equal work between mainlanders and islanders. Chi was arrested and executed by the KMT government, and Hsu was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment.
