Alun Armstrong gives a powerful performance as George Oldfield, the detective charged with bringing to justice the Yorkshire Ripper. Accurately recreating the fear, desperation and hopelessness surrounding the Ripper hunt in northern England, this film takes you along the terrible journey. Oldfield is appointed to head the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper by Chief Constable Ronald Gregory (James Laurenson). As the murders continue the pressure on Oldfield builds. Matters come to a head when a hoaxer from the North East sends letters and a chilling tape taunting Oldfield. Uncertain of the authenticity of the letters and tape Oldfield is reluctant to publish. With the investigation bereft of inspiration Oldfield's suffers a heart attack. The enquiry continues and Oldfield discovers that the hoax letter and tape have been released to the public. The drama reaches a climax when Oldfield and Sutcliffe finally meet face to face. George Oldfield retired in 1983 and died in 1985. In 2006, after this film was made, the hoaxer known as "Wearside Jack" was identified and sentenced to 8 years in prison. - Actors:
