As a city is terrorised by a maniac whose serial crimes involve the beheading of apparently unrelated victims, 16-year-old Aura Petrescu escapes from a sanitorium to return home to her Russian immigrant parents. During one of the seances that her mother holds on a regular basis, the killer strikes without warning and Aura's parents are brutally murdered. Frightened and alone, Aura is convinced that she will be the killer's next victim. Her only hope lies with David Parson, a graphic artist whose curiosity is aroused by Aura's paranoia and anxiety.
