Synopsis:
The first part of Series 4 'Upstairs Downstairs' is the dramatic story of the beginning of World War I from 1914 - 1916. For the Bellamy household, above and below the stairs, the world is fast becoming a different place. The Great War, which changes forever the face of British society, has broken out...The family anxiously awaits news of James (Simon Williams), who is away at war. Meanwhile, Lady Prudence (Joan Benham) presuades Hazel (Meg Wynn Owen) to take in a family of Belgian refugees. Edward (Christopher Beeny) and Daisy (Jacqueline Tong) decide to marry when he comes home on 48 hour leave before setting off to fight in France.
Hudson (Gordon Jackson) reads to the servants from a newspaper article of the sinking of the Lusitania. Meanwhile Hazel is attracted to a shy young officer and resolves to spend the rest of his leave with him, but unfortunately he must be called away to duty and she is left wondering whether she will ever see him again?
