This is the story of the people's war, of how ordinary men and women kept "smiling through" during those terrible months we have come to know as the 'Battle of Britain'. In this programme we focus on the heroes in their flimsy fighter planes who fought against perilous odds in the skies over England. The young dare-devils who risked their lives in deadly combat every day and the ground crews who kept them aloft with a spanner and a prayer. But this is also the heart-warming accounts of unsung civilian heroes - the old lady who refused to leave her bombed-out home, the cockney lad who pulled wounded strangers from a burning building and a fire-fighter who thought "the whole world seemed on fire".
