Harriet Vane decides that it is time to take a break and heads to the relaxing surroundings of North Devon. On a walking tour the peace is rudely shattered when she finds the body of a man on the beach, with his throat slit from ear to ear.
Lord Peter learns of Harriet's discovery and is soon on the scene to lend his powers of detection. Together, they find out that the young man, a Russian engineer who worked as a dancer at the local hotel, was embroiled in a relationship with a wealthy widow whose son was wholly disapproving. But was that motive enough for murder?
