Loosely based on a story by 'Rear Window' author Cornell Woolrich, 'Martha' stars Margit Carstensen as a young woman who finds herself slowly stripped of her freedom after she marries a tyrannical and sadistic man played by 'Peeping Tom' actor Karlheinz Bohm. A bold homage to Douglas Sirk's 1950s Technicolor melodramas, this brilliantly acted and sumptuously photographed film finds Fassbinder at his most wickedly perverse and stylistically assured.
